The Hugh Gregory Gallagher MOTIVATIONAL THEATRE raises public awareness of disability issues and addresses discrimination in our society through dramatizations of real life experiences. Our powerful entertaining and insightful plays highlight people with physical, developmental and mental disabilities as well as those who have been discriminated against based on race, ethnic origin or sexual orientation to help reduce and eliminate prejudice and stigma. Disability advocate Hugh Gregory Gallagher lost use of his legs to polio in 1952. He was 19 years old. After surgeries, he recovered at Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute, studied at Oxford and wrote award-winning books. He also lectured widely on disability issues and the Holocaust, drafted legislation making federal buildings disability-accessible and was instrumental in placing a statue of Franklin D. Roosevelt in his wheelchair at the FDR Memorial. In 1995, he received the Henry Betts Prize for lifetime contributions to persons with disabilities. Mr. Gallagher died in 2004.
