"That's Why She Holds the
Racket Like That" is the story of the life of Marianna Breeding. She
was the first born of 13 children, four with a
chromosomal disorder that shortened their arms and legs and turned their
tiny hands inward. Marianna is the only one of the four to survive.
She was loved and respected by her parents but never pampered and
expected to care for her younger siblings. Blessed with a sparkling
sense of humor and positive outlook on life, she came to the
Chesapeake
Center for developmental disabilities as a client, became a typist,
graduated college and was promoted to employment evaluator, a job she
held for 35 years until retirement. She is married with two grown sons
and grandchildren.
"That's Why She Holds Her Racket Like That"
is an amusing monologue on her life, chronicling family adventures, an
hilarious episode that brought about her dismissal from a parochial
school, meeting the love of her life, John Marvin Breeding, while
playing badminton, and playing practical jokes on her colleagues at the
Chesapeake Center. Amusing, yes, but also profoundly moving.
