"The 'R' Word" Named 2010 Winner
Atlanta area playwright Ryan Schube is the 2011 winner of the "Carlton E. Spitzer Excellence in Writing" award presented by the Hugh Gregory Gallagher Motivational Theatre, Inc. Schube, 22, based "The 'R' Word" on his experiences working with adults with developmental disabilities.
"I was a shy kid until a family friend asked me to volunteer in a community center for persons with diverse developmental disabilities," recalls Schube. "I learned about giving, mutual responsibility, love and hope. That profound experience changed my life."
"We were gratified to receive so many moving and well-written plays," noted Motivational Theatre's executive director Bob Chauncey. "We are indebted to all the gifted playwrights who submitted their entries."
"The 'R' Word" was performed on April 29 - May 1 and May 6 - 8, at the Cadby Theatre on the campus of Chesapeake College. We appreciated the support and participation of Chesapeake College and the Peake Players in helping to bring "The 'R' Word" to local audiences.

Contest Details

Winner will receive cash award of not less than $100 and a plaque presented at the premier performance of her or his play.

Winner will permit MOTIVATIONAL THEATRE to perform play without payment of fee with full credit to playwright in all promotional and printed materials.

MOTIVATIONAL THEATRE assures entrants their work will not be copied or used in any way other than described herein.

Each submission must be an original play not yet performed.

Each must be consistent with the mission of MOTIVATIONAL THEATRE: To raise public awareness of disability and discrimination in society through dramatizations of real life and fictional experiences.

Each must include written permission of all living persons portrayed.

Each must include playwright's name, address, telephone, and email address.

Each must be sent in Word or similar format.
