Diagnosed with mental illness long after he
had become addicted to drugs and been in trouble with the law, J.J.
Wesley, with help from social services and mental health recovery
agencies, turned his life around. He has been drug and alcohol free for
eight years, lives independently and works part time at Safeway and
Channel Marker, one of the mental health recovery groups
instrumental in his recovery.
"Voices in the Wind" tells the story of his
battle with mental illness, the "voices" that told him what to do from
the age of 12, the discrimination he suffered as the only African
American child in his school, his denial that he was ill and needed help
and the people who helped him make a new beginning. A story of courage
overcoming adversity.
